August 8 @ 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM
The first PPSDC general meeting of the 2017-2018 fiscal year will feature the fantastic San Francisco-based portrait photographer, Alexis Cuarezma, who will be giving a talk titled Awaken Your Creative Vision.
Networking begins at 5:30pm and the program begins at 6:30pm.
Go inside a portrait session with this five time Portrait Photographer of the Year and see what is essential to creating images on-assignment with impact and emotion. Learn how to quickly connect with your subject to have a harmonious relationship during the shoot. Get insights into portrait sessions with some of the best athletes in the world like LeBron James, Chris Paul, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao.
Alexis will go over lighting, theories, and concepts to help you recognize and create images with impact. He will show you results from a 39 second photo shoot with a world class athlete and how he simultaneously executed 2 separate lighting setups during an assignment for Sports Illustrated to give the editors what they wanted while still creating images for himself. Never settle for good enough when it comes to your vision.
During this talk, you’ll learn his approach to creating/lighting images with impact, connecting with your subject, and how he plans and executes a photo shoot to make his vision a reality.
Alexis Cuarezma is a San Francisco-based photographer who specializes in both on-location and in-studio portraiture. A passion for bold visuals has colored his whole life, and his childhood interest was nurtured at CSUEB, where he studied art, graphic design and photography.
His cultural heritage has proven a prominent influence; volatility in Nicaragua forced Alexis’ family to emigrate to the U.S. when he was six years old. His vision has been informed by themes of sacrifice – of life, love, and self for the greater good. Muses include French Neoclassical painter Jacques-Louis David and Nicaraguan poets Rigoberto Lopez-Perez and Ruben Dario, as well as his namesake, Alexis Arguello, a professional boxer, three-time world champion, and politician – a source of inspiration for Alexis’ involvement in boxing photography.
He’s an alumnus of the prestigious Eddie Adams Workshop (Barnstorm XXIV), has been commissioned for assignments by NIKE, Sports Illustrated, the LA Times, the New York Times, HBO and a number of international publications. His touch has graced the cover of Sports Illustrated 6 times, boxing’s Bible, the esteemed Ring Magazine, and that of Undisputed Fight Magazine; covers of UK publications SEEN, Fighting Fit, and Boxing News round out Alexis’ fight resume. His vibrant aesthetic is often sought out for editorial, commercial, and private commissions.
Distinctions include the PPGBA’s Photographer of the Year 2013, 2012, Portrait Photographer of the Year for five consecutive years (2009-2013), Ted Gurney Portrait of the Year 2012, 2013 and Print of the Year in 2011.
