PPSDC General Meeting – June 11, 2019

June 11, 2019 @ 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Join PPSDC at West Coast School for an evening with Deanne Fitzmaurice, who will be giving a talk on her Pulitzer-winning documentary work.

Networking begins at 5:30pm and the program begins at 6:30pm. Please register below for this meeting.

Evening Presentation

Deanne’s presentation will focus on her Pulitzer-winning, long-term, photographic story of Saleh, an Iraqi boy who was severely injured in a grenade explosion at age nine. Her talk will tackle the question of objectivity, while still engaging with subjects to tell their story in the best possible way. She comes from a newspaper background, which has a really strict policy about not getting involved with subjects. It’s all about credibility and believable photographs.

However, her approach towards subjects changed when she was given an assignment by The San Francisco Chronicle in 2003 to photograph Saleh, a 9-year old Iraqi boy who had been flown to Oakland Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment. Instead of remaining objective, she engaged with the boy and his father, ultimately forming a relationship that helped them feel comfortable letting her into their personal lives. The work won her the Pulitzer in 2005 for Feature Photography, and to date she continues to photograph Saleh – now a grown man – and his family.
