If you’re a photographer in the wedding, concert, sports, event, travel and hospitality industry and you’ve been dead in the water due to the current pandemic, or you’ve always been curious about what it’s like to shoot for the real estate and architectural industry, then this may just be the perfect topic for you!
In this 90-minute beginner-to-intermediate talk, attendees will learn the basic tips and tricks, do’s and don’ts for shooting homes and architecture while making a good living doing it. Sam will also cover the necessary tools and techniques like gear, software, smart and efficient workflows, and basic business strategies to succeed in this very competitive but rewarding field.
Sam Chen first became intrigued with photography at the tender age of 5 when he picked up his father’s vintage Minolta rangefinder camera. But it wasn’t until high school and after years of saving his allowance money that he was able to finally afford his very own SLR film camera – a Minolta Maxxum 5000. It was love at first sight.
But like any good obedient Asian son, he abandoned his dream of shooting for NatGeo and spent the first 10 years of his young adult life working as a Creative Director for a Fortune 500 company in Silicon Valley.
After the Dot-Com crash, he dove headfirst into animation filmmaking resulting in several award-winning films and being shortlisted for an Academy Award. To help finance his own indie filmmaking projects, Sam worked as an adjunct professor teaching digital cinematography, character animation, and CG lighting at the Art Institute.
It was then that Sam stumbled upon aerial photography using early consumer drones + GoPro cameras to create artistic images and videos around town. This led to Sam founding his company Aloha PhotoVideo with early commissions shooting for Port of San Diego and several luxury real estate brokerages such as Pacific Sotheby’s, Berkshire Hathaway, and Compass among others. Sam stays active in several local and international photographic groups and regularly contributes as a Judge for the annual San Diego County Fair Photo Contest.
When not slaving away in front of Lightroom and Photoshop, Sam is an avid music lover and enjoys slurping ramen, strumming his Les Paul, and cruising San Diego on his new eBike.
